Samhain's Sirens: Day 6, October 7

Monday, October 7, 2013

Welcome back, and Happy First Monday in October! We hope you had a wonderful weekend, and are ready to play again!

We'll have two giveaway announcements this morning, from Friday and Saturday. Please please PLEASE be sure you are entering a valid email address when entering the contests. I'd hate to see you put all that effort into entering 6 times, and then not being able to win because you didn't give us an email address.

We hope you're enjoying yourself as much as we are! Remember! Every time you enter one of the giveaways, you're automatically entered into the Grand Prize Giveaway at the end of the month! You can read more about that in the Rules section at the top of the page.

We're here to help via email or contact form at the top of the page.

So, let's get hot on the music!

Today, we are honoring The King- Elvis

Embracing the Samhain Shadows by Jen Rue

As I write this, still early in the eve, the light is long gone.  It slipped below the western hills some time ago.  The last blaze of gold tried valiantly to hold on but the inky twilight consumed it.  We have time yet, before the shortest day winks in and out, but these autumn nights already linger, dragging their clawed feet long hours into the next morn.
We have the good fortune to have access to this mad invention called "electricity," and so we may drive back the night for as many hours as we wish.  But there are more and more studies about the effects of long hours of faux daylight and the effect that limited (or a complete lack of) darkness might have on our brains and subsequently, our well-being.  Many researchers tie the lack of a sufficient amount of darkness (ideally eight hours,) to more than just sleep issues.  Our brains need darkness to produce melatonin, which assists in regulating our sleep and lends a hand to our immune system.  A good dose of darkness keeps our circadian rhythm (the conductor that keeps our body's orchestra functioning at its peak) ticking along smoothly.

Take a moment and plug something simple like the effect of lack of darkness into your favorite search engine.  It will send you running to your bedroom to ditch the digital clock. While you are at it - get rid of the television and the laptop.  The bedroom is for getting some sleep, and getting some.  That's it.  Every little light blinking from a computer or DVR is robbing you of some much needed melatonin.  If you leave a candle in the window (electric or battery-operated of course,) or a little light on somewhere in the house, make sure it cannot be seen from your bedroom.

While you are light-proofing your sleeping chamber, why not dial down the electric light overall in the evenings?  Being that this is one of the most enchanting times of the year, perhaps candlelight or a lovely fire in the hearth would not only wean your eyes off the florescent overhead glow, but lend a certain atmosphere to this bewitching month.  How about spending some outside beside a bonfire or simply stargazing (there are six meteor showers between October 7th and December 14th this year!)

Want to enlist some friends or get the coven in on the fun?  Gather together the materials to make candles, create hag tapers from mullein, or blend up some midnight margaritas and dance around in the gloom of the garden.  Commit to doing some shadow work over the dark months and engage in meditation practices that begin with you sitting in complete darkness.  Explore this lightless realm and make friends with the night.

Now that the season of darkness has begun, what better time to reacquaint yourself with the shadows!

  36. The first time around my favorite art piece made by Tess was the Fairy Witch Knoll but for this one I will state another work I found to be equally as beautiful, the Witch Wall Plate. I actually failed to realize that it was hand painted the first time I looked at it. Tess is a very talented artist.
